EdiFabric.com redesign: Spec Builder, Spec Library and EdiNation Last updated: 2026-10-09

edifabric.com has a new design, a rebuilt EdiNation, a searchable Spec Library, and a Spec Builder that customizes OpenEDI specs in the browser. You can download every spec for ediFabric .NET and ediFabric Native from the library, or after you customize it.

A new edifabric.com

The public site and the docs now live on the same domain. The top menu is shorter: Products, Free Tools, Developers, Pricing and Contact us. Free Tools opens the Spec Library, Spec Builder, the X12 local editor and the X12 JSON converter. Developers opens .NET, Native, Cloud and the EDI resources in one panel.

The docs moved off Zendesk onto edifabric.com, so getting started, the API reference, the transaction guides and the changelog sit next to the products they describe.

EdiNation, rebuilt in the browser

EdiNation is a free X12 editor that runs in the browser on WebAssembly. It parses, formats, validates and acknowledges X12 and HIPAA files, and converts them to JSON, without sending the EDI to our servers. Open it and start; there is no account and no serial key.

It uses the same Native engine as ediFabric Native, so a file you debug in EdiNation is the file your application will parse. Custom specs from Spec Builder load in the editor the same way as the standard ones.

The old hosted portal is still at edinationold.edifabric.com. It processes files on our servers and is not the editor to use for PHI.

A searchable Spec Library

The EDI Spec Library lists every transaction we ship for X12, HIPAA, EDIFACT, EANCOM, HL7, NCPDP, IATA PADIS and VDA. Type a transaction id, a name or a version in the search box, or browse by standard.

Each spec page shows the loops, segments, elements and codes, and three downloads: OpenEDI JSON, the ediFabric .NET template, and the ediFabric Native model. The steps are in View and download EDI specs.

Customize OpenEDI specs in Spec Builder

The EDI Spec Builder now edits OpenEDI specs online. OpenEDI is an OpenAPI 3 schema with EDI extensions; Native, Cloud and the builder all read the same file.

To make a partner-specific spec:

  1. Open the standard spec in the library, for example an 837P or an 850.
  2. Select Customize in Spec Builder and give the copy a name such as acme_837P. Names that start with EdiNation or EdiFabric are reserved.
  3. Change usage, repeats, lengths, formats and codes, or add, move, copy and delete loops, segments and elements.
  4. Select Update. Parse and validate files against that spec in EdiNation, or download it for ediFabric Native, Cloud or .NET.

Download specs for ediFabric .NET and Native

Every spec in the library downloads in three formats. You do not need a zip from support.

  1. Go to the EDI Spec Library.
  2. Search for the transaction, or open it from a standard and version.
  3. On the spec page, open the tab for the format you need:
    • OpenEDI JSON — select Download OpenEDI. For ediFabric Native, ediFabric Cloud and Spec Builder.
    • ediFabric .NET — select Download C# for the .NET template, with the common segments, composites and codes it needs.
    • ediFabric Native — select Download Native for the model Native loads from Python, Java, C or C#.
  4. For a partner-specific spec, customize it in Spec Builder first, then download from the builder after Update.

Browsing and downloading the library does not need an account. The serial key you already use for .NET, Native or Cloud is what you apply when you parse against the file.
